The green area of San Saturnino is closely connected to the early Christian basilica of the same name, the oldest building of Christian worship in Cagliari, dating between the 5th and 6th centuries AD, and built on a pre-existing late-Roman necropolis. Over the centuries, the complex has undergone multiple transformations: in medieval times it was remodeled and integrated into a Benedictine monastery. Between 2020 and 2022, an enhancement project coordinated by the Regional Directorate of Museums of Sardinia transformed the site into an urban archaeological garden, accessible and passable, which integrates elements of contemporary design with the protection of historic structures. The interventions involved the safety, the conservative restoration of the basilica and the construction of raised paths for the use of the complex. The area is configured as a historic urban space with an archaeological and monumental character, located in the Villanova district of Cagliari, near the historic Piazza San Cosimo. The floor plan is irregular, with a north-west/south-east orientation, organized around the core of the basilica with open spaces and paths connected by walkways and ramps. The area is divided into a flat green area, delimited by a perimeter wall inside which the archaeological area insists. In the area in front of the entrance to the Basilica, an access ramp connects the area to the public square, introducing a first green space with geometric flower beds characterized by a historic palm tree of considerable height. On the sides of the entrance to the Basilica, the archaeological areas that can be visited. Crossing the basilica and going through a door located on the apsidal side, you enter the green area behind. In this space, the historic core of the garden, characterized by the orchard, is preserved. On the side overlooking Via Logudoro, a row of trees consisting of pines and oaks, flanked by mastic hedges, outlines the perimeter of the garden. At the back, in the direction of the church's apse, a small building houses offices of the Superintendency.
Aspects of interest
The archaeological area of San Saturnino represents a rare example of an urban archaeological park, with the remains of the early Christian basilica integrated into a system of elevated paths that guarantee enjoyment and protection. The absence of tall trees and selective vegetation enhance the visibility of archaeological and architectural emergencies. The site is a symbol of historical identity and urban regeneration.
