The Municipal Art Gallery is included in the Public Gardens north of the fortress of the Castello district. The neoclassical façade was built in 1828 to a design by Carlo Boyl di Putifigari, while the original block of the building dates back to the end of the 18th century. Originally the headquarters of the royal powder keg, at the end of the Twenties it was the subject of a radical renovation that also involved the area of the current embankment, by the Cagliari architect Ubaldo Badas. In 1928 it was transformed into a permanent art gallery. Asset collections were mostly established in the twentieth century through donations, bequests and acquisitions. Today they include the most important collection of works created by Sardinian artists; a prestigious and specific collection, linked to art trends between the Sixties and Eighties; a collection of ethnographic materials from Sardinia, dated between the end of the 18th century and the first half of the 20th century; a widespread and complete collection of prints recently expanded with the Valle donation. Since 1999, the Municipal Art Gallery, having acquired the Ingrao collection by the City of Cagliari, has also housed the prestigious 20th century works of this generous collector.
