The building is located in the historic district of Castello, between Palazzo Amat and Palazzo delle Seziate.
It has a neoclassical façade with a horizontal crown, resting on a denticles frame and decorated with festoons.
Formerly home to the National Archaeological Museum, the building is located in the area where the mint and the armory were formerly located. Designed by engineer Dionigi Scano, it was inaugurated in 1904 by director Antonio Taramelli, who took care of the transfer of the collections from the Vivanet building (in Via Roma).
The first nucleus of the Museum originated from the Cabinet of Antiquities and Natural History created in 1800 by Viceroy Carlo Felice in the Royal Palace. From here the collections passed in 1806 to the University and finally to the State, visiting different locations and being enriched over the years by numerous donations and archaeological materials coming from archaeological excavations in various parts of the island.
The building housed the archaeological collections from 1904 until the end of the 80s. In 1993, the current headquarters of the National Archaeological Museum of Cagliari was inaugurated in the nearby Citadel of Museums.
