The church dedicated to the Holy Martyrs Giorgio and Caterina dei Genovesi is located at the top of Via Scano, at the foot of Mount Urpinu.
In rooms adjacent to the church, the Museum of the Genovese Archconfraternity can be visited at the following times:
The church is one of the most important cases of reconstruction in Cagliari and replaces the old building of the Genovesi Archconfraternity, in Via Manno, half destroyed by the bombing of 13 May 1943.
It was inaugurated in 1964 after long and conflicting events that included both the proposal for a new church in the primitive area (1947), the exchange of the land on Via Manno (sold to the La Rinascente group) with the new area, and, finally, the definitive project of the engineer Marco Piloni and the architect Francesco Giachetti (1957).
The building has a central plan and is characterized by large paraboloid arches visible from the outside, which alternately contain blind walls and large, colorful windows. Raw materials recovered in the ancient church were used, such as the great coat of arms of Genoa above the entrance and the marble of the chapels, partially taken up in today's altars.
Among the most interesting aspects are the abstract stained glass windows with symbols of the Passion, designed by Rolando Monti, and the monochrome paintings by Dino Fantini, which recall the events of the church and the patron saints.
Now entering the urban landscape, the building was completed in 2001 with a staircase, provided for in the original project, but now highly questionable along a road that has become a fast flowing and connecting artery.
