Cagliari, Carlo Alberto Barracks

The building is located on the limestone ridge that connects to the hill where the historic district of Castello stands.
The barracks were built in 1846 to a design by Domenico Barabino, the Genoese military genius's major, in the esplanade called San Lorenzo. Until 1740, a citadel stood here, opening the so-called Royal Gate, designed by the Turin military architect Felice De Vincenti.
Il Barabino took care of the logistic-military aspects without neglecting urban decoration in the monumental characterization of the long façade on Viale Buongiorno.
The barracks buildings were built by the “sappers of the Kingdom” and temporarily housed the military library of the Presidio of Cagliari. Today they are the headquarters of the State Police.
