Burgos, Nuraghe Costa

Burgos, Nuraghe Costa

Burgos, Nuraghe Costa

The monument is located inside the forest of Foresta Burgos in Su Pranigheddu de S'Unighedda.
Commonly called Sa Reggia, it includes a complex nuraghe, a surrounding village and a powerful antewall (surface area of 450 square meters).
The nuraghe consists of a keep and a bastion of four secondary towers with a courtyard inside.
The central tower (diam. m 14) is built with polygonal basalt blocks in the lower part and well worked in the upper part.
It is accessed through an entrance - oriented in an E with a rectangular light - that leads to an entrance (length m 4); on the second wall of this there is the entrance to the stairwell that, with a helical development, led to the upper floors. This compartment can only be covered today in the initial section (length 2.50 m).
The room appears to be filled with earth and boulders collapsed from the upper structures.
The keep overlooks the hallway courtyard - with an almost semicircular plan (m 6) - which was accessed through an entrance to S.
On the courtyard, the entrances of the corridors that led to the four secondary towers opened: one tower is now almost completely collapsed; a second one preserves only part of the walls of the room, where a niche opened; two other towers are now inaccessible.
Around the bastion, the village covers a large area: among the dense shrub vegetation, it is now possible to clearly identify only two huts with a circular plan (perimeter of m 9) made of rows of polygonal basalt blocks.
The element that, however, characterizes and makes this monument unique is the antemural.
The defensive wall structure - which can be followed today for a stretch 60 m long (height 3 m) - has no towers and preserves, exceptionally, the “round road” (width 1.40 m).

History of excavations
The complex was excavated by Giuseppa Tanda.

How to get
There From the hamlet of Foresta Burgos, follow the signs to reach Nuraghe Costa; when you arrive at the Costa stables, you leave the car and continue on foot to the left along an uphill path; you meet a fork and take the path to the right until you reach a wooden gate. The nuragic complex can be seen a short distance away among the dense vegetation.
