Burgos, Castello del Goceano

Burgos, Castello del Goceano

Burgos, Castello del Goceano

The castle of Burgos is located on top of a granite peak at the foot of the southwest side of Mount Rasu, 647 m above sea level, visible even from a great distance, at a point of fundamental importance for land control. Scenographically isolated, it exudes the suggestion of the fortifications linked to historical events and to the daily life of the Middle Ages.
According to some sources, it was built around 1134 by Gonnario I, the sovereign of Torres. At the end of the 13th century it passed first into the hands of Genoa, then to the Doria family; in the middle of the 14th century it was acquired by the rulers of Arborea, who, through exemptions and privileges, decreed the repopulation of the entire area. Around 1516, the castle was still defined as being in good condition. In 1901, it was already spoken of as a ruin.
The fortified structure, with its irregular plan stretched according to the N/O-S/E guidelines, is divided into a wall, roughly shaped like a “U”, built in mixed stone and bricks, including some heavily trumped slits, a compartment dug into the rock, and above all the main tower. The lower part of the walls presumably dates back to the 12th century and was built further under Aragonese domination, in the 15th century.
The tower, with a square plan, about 16 m high, has two floors, in summarily worked limestone cantons reinforced with blocks of red vulcanite in the corners. There are no blackbirds or hanging shelves in the upper part of the structure. Several rooms, whose foundations have remained, had to overlook the inner courtyard of the fortress, where there is the entrance to an underground environment identified as a tank. Inside, the latter is plastered, not very wide and turned into a barrel.
To the N of the main tower there are a number of other environments of uncertain use. It can be reasonably assumed that they were used by the troops and servants that populated the castle, even if there are no material remains that help clarify the function of the various rooms.

History of studies
The essential bibliography on the castle of Burgos is based on the entry “Gocean”, edited by Vittorio Angius, in 1841, for the Casalis “Dictionary”. Subsequently, the contribution of Dionigi Scano (1907), the article by Foiso Fois (1970), who is also responsible for the extensive description in the volume “Castles of Medieval Sardinia”, are mentioned. Roberto Coroneo's brief summary in the volume “Romanesque Architecture from the Middle of the Thousand to the Early '300" dates back to 1993. The most recent contribution is the article by Daniele Vacca, published in 2002.
