Arbus, Sardinian Knife Museum

Arbus, Sardinian Knife Museum

Arbus, Sardinian Knife Museum

Created by the famous cutler Paolo Pusceddu, it is located next to his laboratory called, like the typical knife of the territory, Arburesa. In addition to the dunes of Piscinas, Arbus is known worldwide for its knives, called in the local dialect “arresojas”, inseparable companions of the man who lives in the Sardinian countryside. In the museum it is possible to relive the history of cutlery in Sardinia, starting from the Neolithic period. The museum itinerary begins in the room where the oldest knives are located, among which the reproduction of an obsidian dagger stands out, a glassy rock used since ancient Neolithic times to make hunting tools, but it is also possible to admire pieces from the 16th century. Some knives are real works of art, knives with horn handles of every shape and color, inlaid and carved in the shape of deer, wild boar, mouflon and eagle, representing the Sardinian fauna. The products of the most representative contemporary Sardinian knife makers (Francesco Trudu from Villacidro, Sebastiano Spanu from Dorgali and Barore Brundu from Pattada) are also on display. The last room is the reconstruction of the old blacksmith's workshop “su Ferreri”, in which original tools from the last century are visible: a bellows, a flywheel drill, a pedal wheel, an ancient anvil. Inside the Museum, films dedicated to the phases and techniques of knife construction are screened and there are also some sculptures by the painter Archimede Scarpa di Selargius and Efisio Pisano di Villacidro. Master cutler Paolo Pusceddu was included in the Guinness Book of Records for creating, in 1986, the largest knife in the world, 3 meters and 35 centimeters long and weighing 80 kilos. This record was broken, in 2002, when Master Pusceddu built a switchblade 4 meters and 85 centimeters long, weighing 295 kilograms.
