Beschreibung
The north-eastern coast of Sardinia is the most renowned portion of the Gallura territory, a historic-geographic region in the province of Olbia-Tempio. While, as a whole, the Gallura area stands out for its wind-hewn granite mountains and deep inland valleys, along the seaboard it takes on a unique appearance with jagged coastline, small gulfs, natural harbours and deep fjords, features present in this northernmost portion of Sardinia as well as in the sequence of minor islands, a natural bridge to Corsica. The outlying position and physical features of the landscape have culturally isolated this territory from the surrounding zones and has left it open to influxes from the sea, influxes which were not always peaceful. This is why the culture, language, forms of settlement and history of this area rarely reflect those found in other regions of Sardinia. This land is renowned worldwide, home of the Costa Smeralda and the La Maddalena Archipelago, that series of beaches running along the coastline from Palau to Badesi and all the way to the westernmost tip of the area where the Coghinas River mouth marks the boundary with the Anglona valleys. Beside a truly unique landscape, vestiges can still be found to recount millennia of history. Indeed, the Arzachena territory can boast a wealth and incredible variety of archaeological finds dating back to the distant Neolithic period, touching on all ages and cultures. However, it is the Roman Age that is most effectively represented in the area: the finds from the Spargi shipwreck are now on display at the “Nino Lamboglia” Naval Archaeological Museum in La Maddalena. The Middle Ages are reflected in the fortified structures of Santa Teresa, while the churches scattered throughout the countryside bear witness to ancient villages which have long since disappeared. Imposing fortifications offer testimony of this area’s strategic position along the Mediterranean trade routes, and this is still the case today. Beside these we find symbolic sites of the Italian Risorgimento, such as those linked to the presence of Giuseppe Garibaldi, or the two world wars.
