The antiquarium, adjacent to the archaeological area called “King Barbarian's Palace”, displays archaeological finds from the excavations of the Roman city of Turris Libisonis. The materials found in the urban area, ceramics used, various tools, votive and cultural furnishings, but also honorary statues from the first and third centuries A.D., votive areas, inscriptions, cinerary urns, mosaics and frescoed plasters, testify to the vitality of a commercial city. The area of King Barbarian's Palace has returned many interesting finds, including a high relief representing Cautopates, fragments of statues and inscribed plates, clay pipes and plumbes used as water pipes. The settlement is completed by funerary items from various necropolises, such as the western one consisting of capuchin and box burials and hypogea decorated with pictorial and plastic motifs, or from the necropolises of Monte Angellu, Tanca Borgona and Scoglio Lungo. An early Christian polychrome funerary mosaic with dedicatory inscriptions recalling the couple Settimia Musa and Dionysus comes from the Balai area. In the antiquarium there is also a municipal collection consisting of finds dating from the Nuragic age to the late imperial age.
Why it is important to visit it
Of great interest is the opportunity to visit, in a complementary way to visiting the museum, the nearby archaeological area of Turris Libisonis, which extends to the right bank of the nearby Rio Mannu river, where the bridge built at the beginning of the first century AD is preserved, an exceptional work of engineering, and includes a series of thermal facilities and houses rich in polychrome and figured mosaics.
