Arborea, Sassu's Idrovora

Sassu's drain pump is part of the framework of the remediation of Arborea, once Mussolinia di Sardegna. Inaugurated on November 4, 1934 in the presence of the highest fascist authorities of the island, it stands out for its height in the flat territory and for the modernist and futurist forms that make it very different from the contemporary Luri sewer.
The drying up of the Sassu pond, a body of water of about two thousand hectares, had nevertheless revealed swampy and sandy terrain, from which it was necessary to drain and collect stagnant and malarial water. This forced the use of reinforced concrete in the sewer structures, which became the emblem of the second phase of comprehensive remediation in the Terralba plain.
The building, thanks to the engineer Flavio Scano, has decidedly innovative solutions, typical of Futurism and Rationalism, but linked to fascist references. The recurring theme is in fact the littoral bundle as both decorative and symbolic.
Asymmetric factory buildings have both curvilinear and mechanical elements and more regular elements. The central parallelepiped, with long windows, joins the two lateral bodies, which have semi-cylinder shapes crossed by long semicolumns in the highest part and by horizontal openings in the lowest part. The entrance tower to the power lines has a cantilever roof, on which a small square body with a series of teeth rises, recalling an electrical transformer.
