MUT, the Tonnara Museum is located in Stintino in Via Lepanto, on the Panoramic Road that leads to the town, overlooking the Minori port.
It was set up in the restored building that housed the former Alpi plant (Fish Production Processing Company).
The Museum was opened to the public on 18 June 2016.
The Tonnara Museum tells of a time that no longer exists. It tells of schools of fish that follow the currents of the Mediterranean, of creeks of sea that await their arrival, and of a system of nets that intercept their passage. It describes the traditional method of fishing tuna, practiced in the Gulf of Asinara until the last century. It outlines the lives of the men who have fished and worked tuna with effort and tenacity. It encompasses the identity of an entire town, Stintino, whose history is closely linked to that of Tonnara Saline. Today, the memory of men and of the sea perpetuates.
The user is led on a multimedia journey, an audiovisual and musical journey, of great suggestion. A series of videos, with a narrator in Italian and subtitles in English, reconstruct the events of Tonnara Saline, the story of Stintino and the island of Asinara. Vintage images, full of charm and ritual, flow through the screens, alternating with intense and passionate testimonies. On display are the tools used in the trap, its documentation, the diaries, old newspaper articles, the clothes used during the slaughter, the reproductions of the boats and the trap. The exhibition also includes selected works by Sardinian artists who have painted the life of the trap, from Stanis Dessy to Ausonio Tanda, from Nani Tedeschi to Angelo Maggi.
Why it's important to visit it
The Tonnara Museum in Stintino intends to preserve memory and preserve collective identity. But it also wants to be an open space, in constant dialogue with the community of reference and to transmit to tourists passing through northern Sardinia the cultural values of the territory.
