Follow, Spanish Prison

The path that leads from Palazzina] Liberty to the Spanish Prison follows a characteristic itinerary, through an ancient underpass called “su Porci”, made of stone houses, with wrought iron balconies and carved wooden doors.
The prison, built in the first half of the 17th century, is surrounded by residential houses, whose height prevents external vision. It is a square-plan structure arranged on two levels, each with an entrance, plus a partial attic called “su staulu farzu”. He represented the administration of justice, in this area of Barbagia, for three hundred years, until 1975.
The structure, divided into two floors, preserves various nineteenth-century furnishings visible in the caretaker's apartment, in the kitchen and in the three female, male and strict cells. In the kitchen, rebuilt and furnished with all the tools of the time, there is a fireplace built in 1910 which, with the two masonry stoves, replaced the central fireplace called “on sheets”, without a hood for the flow of smoke.
The floor of the female cell is made of chestnut wooden beams and planks, which form the attic, to the underlying environment, intended for the penalty cell called “sa cella de su pei in tipu”. The room is an entrance of a few square meters, paved with clay, without windows, where the torture of prisoners was practiced.
The visitors' journey is completed by the section that shows the documents on the transport of detainees from Seui prison to other centers, sometimes with wagons driven by several horses, rarely by bus; almost always, however, the trips took place, with armed escort, on foot. Many trips began to be carried out by rail, when the train made its appearance in Seui, in April 1894.

Why it's important to visit it
The museum is unique in its kind, because it revives the dramatic living conditions of prisoners, at the time when the police and judicial system was applied to the island by feudal lords. Also interesting are the results of the studies concerning the doctor's interventions on prisoners and those on the potions and remedies that the pharmacist prepared and supplied on behalf of the Municipality. The list of herbs and plants is of considerable interest and represents a cross-section of life, not only in prison, but by the entire Seuese community, since pharmaceutical preparations were administered to anyone who needed them. The City paid both for people in conditions of absolute misery and for the 'guests' of the prison.
