Settimo San Pietro, Cuccuru Nuraxi's Sacred Well

Settimo San Pietro, Cuccuru Nuraxi's Sacred Well

Settimo San Pietro, Cuccuru Nuraxi's Sacred Well

The archaeological area is located in a hilly area at the foot of the southwestern slope of the Seven Brothers mountains, in the Sarrabus region of south-eastern Sardinia.
The complex includes the remains of a polylobed nuraghe, connected to a votive well and a temple with a well.
The votive well is located in front of the sacred well. It has a circular opening that emerges on the 1.50 m decking, has a cylindrical shape and is about 3 meters deep. The outside is covered with sandstone slabs and small tuff stones tied with mud mortar.
The vestibule of the well temple has not been preserved.
The staircase, which branches off from a sort of “air intake and light” of one of the nuraghe towers, missing three or four steps at the top, has an ovival plan and section; the roof consists of seven tiered lintels. The room in “Tholos” is 5.75 m high. On the finely paved floor, the actual well opens, bordered by a monolithic circular ring. The barrel, cylindrical, lined with rows of stones, descends to a depth of 12 meters until it is embedded in a narrow siphon dug into the rock, which still sinks by 10 meters.
The dating of the well is between the Recent Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age.
200 meters from the Nuraghe, in the past, lithic tombs from the Nuragic period were highlighted, one of which contained more than ten individuals and interesting accessories: including a silver sheet and 179 necklace elements.

History of excavations
It was excavated in the years 1960-61 by Enrico Atzeni.
