Anatomy has been a subject of teaching at the University of Sassari since at least 1635, thanks to a privilege granted by Philip IV: since then, you can think, models and anatomical preparations and equipment for teaching needs have been collected. The Anatomical Collection, in its current physiognomy, was founded in 1912 on the initiative of Giuseppe Levi on a base of pre-existing but non-systematized material, such as Rolando's brain models, Pitzorno preparations and ancient instruments; the first exhibition is set up at the anatomical amphitheater of the Palazzina Destefanis (Viale Mancini, corner of Corso Angioi). The collection was gradually increased, obtaining official recognition and the naming of the illustrious anatomist Luigi Rolando at the end of the 80s, with Prof. Gianni Tedde; in 1992 it was transferred to its current headquarters. It consists of several sections: Embryology, a collection of about 50 human fetuses at different stages of growth and examples of malformations; Anatomical preparations, with 170 preparations, the oldest from the beginning of the 19th century, relating to the following areas: Topographic Anatomy, Angiology, Myology, Neuroanatomy, Osteology, Spalancnology; Scientific devices, including about 40 microscopes and small instruments. In the same Department there is a library section with 600 volumes dating back to the centuries. XVII-XIX. Among the materials in the collection are the syringe used to preserve Giuseppe Garibaldi's corpse and the young girl's hand petrified by Cagliari's anatomist Efisio Marini and donated to the City of Sassari in 1876.
