Perugas, Sacristian Santa Maria degli Angeli Diocesan Museum

The diocesan museum, which houses the well-known altarpiece of Saint George, is set up in the parish church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
The Altarpiece of Saint George is 8.60 meters high and 6.40 meters wide. Made entirely of wood and painted with tempera colors, it has layers of oil re-paintings and takes up a Gothic-Aragonese style, recognizable by the wooden frames inlaid and covered with gold foil.
It consists of more than 50 tables and a central niche, anchored to a structure behind it, now in metal, formerly wooden. After its restoration, since 1995 it has been kept in a museum chapel, specially built inside the parish church “Santa Maria degli Angeli”, and is part of the “Integrated Museum System” of the Diocese of Tempio Ampurias.
Its function is not only ornamental but it is above all a great liturgical illustration.
We have no definite news about the author, he is conventionally called 'Master of Perfugas'.
The main elements that characterize the Altarpiece of Saint George are: The Predella:
the part below the niche, where the altar was inserted, in which the image of the Pietà stands out, accompanied by the four doctors of the Church: Saint Ambrose, Saint Gregory, Saint Jerolamo and Saint Augustine.
The Theme: it consists of a series of scenes, which mainly explain some of the main moments in the life of Jesus and Mary. Among the most significant depictions are the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Crucifixion and the Holy Family with Saint Anne.
The Niche: due to its size, and because of its interior painted in blue, it probably originally had to house a statue depicting the Madonna with the child. The wooden statue of Saint George the martyr is currently inserted inside.
Il Polvarolo: external frame that encloses the Altarpiece on three sides. It depicts saints, martyrs and prophets who are also linked to popular devotion.
Among the archival documents, one of the oldest church dedication scrolls stands out: this is the act of consecration of the church of Santa Vittoria, today in the territory of Erula, dated 1120. There is another reconsecration scroll, always from the same church, dated 1320. In the first parchment, the name of the oldest known bishop of the ancient diocese of Ampurias is mentioned: Nicolaus Galuleiu.
The Altarpiece was initially the altar of the country church of San Giorgio, built between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century. The church is about 3 km from the town and has a façade built with blocks of red trachyte where, at the top, there is a rose window, and sculpted on the access portal, the statues of Saint Peter, Saint George and Saint Paul stand out. The Altarpiece was located in the presbytery of the church where today there is a photographic copy.

Why is it important to visit it
Because of the presence of the sixteenth-century altarpiece, one of the most complete in Sardinia, and for one of the oldest parchments dedicating a Romanesque church on the island.
