Pau, Obsidian Museum

Pau, Obsidian Museum

Located at the entrance to the town, for those who come from Ales, it was founded in 1999 as an artistic museum that values obsidian, a glassy rock that in Sardinia is found exclusively on Monte Arci.
The artistic works of Karmine Piras, the first and most appreciated sculptor of obsidian, and others created by the Atzori brothers from Oristano, are on display.
The archaeological section is being set up, with the exhibition of the finds from the excavations started in the territory of Pau. and the section for the permanent exhibition of minerals.
The visit to the museum is completed by the historical naturalistic itinerary, which leads to the summit of Monte Arci, along which there is the oldest obsidian deposit in the entire Mediterranean, particularly suggestive of the numerous scales found along the path. General Alberto della Marmora, who visited these places in the nineteenth century, was particularly impressed by them, so much so that he wrote in his “Itinerary” that he had not seen such a quantity of black and shiny stone anywhere else.
Distributed in the urban area, there are some works carved on obsidian rock, of such a size that they can be counted in the Guinness Book of Records.

Why it's important to visit it
The museum is unique in its kind in the Mediterranean basin.
