At the southern entrance to the town of Mandas, in a dominant position on the hills below, the Convent of the Minor Observant Franciscan Friars was built in the early 16th century, an austere and imposing architectural compendium, built around the church of San Francesco, now deconsecrated and used as a library.
In subsequent phases the village was enriched with new buildings of worship until the end of the 18th century, when the friars had to abandon it following the suppression of the religious orders.
Among these new buildings of worship, on today's Piazza Carlo Alberto, in a position adjacent to the church of San Giacomo (today's parish church), the church of San Cristoforo was built in the 17th century, initially dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary.
Originally the church of San Cristoforo hosted the brotherhoods of the Rosario and the Virgin of Itria (subsequently extinct), and today it is also deconsecrated. After the conclusion of a recent conservative restoration, the church was transformed into a museum and, in an atmosphere made even more evocative by the elegant museum layout, it currently houses valuable collections of sacred and cult objects, created between the 16th and 18th centuries by great masters, painters, sculptors, goldsmiths.
Why it is important to visit it
The museum exhibition attracts numerous visitors every year. It includes a vast and precious collection of objects belonging to sacred art: from the stupendous polychrome statues to the precious silver, such as those of the famous Genoese silversmith Montaldo, who also worked on behalf of the Cathedrals of Cagliari and Iglesias.
