Lanusei, Diocesan Museum of Ogliastra

Lanusei, Diocesan Museum of Ogliastra

Lanusei, Diocesan Museum of Ogliastra

It is located on the first floor of the Episcopal Seminary, a building structured in the early twentieth century. The museum itinerary is divided into four sections, one of which is dedicated to natural history and archeology, with a collection of minerals, fossils and archaeological finds from the Nuragic, Punic and Roman periods, another to the history of the diocese starting from the judicial period, around the year 1000, when it was founded in the town of Suelli, in Trexenta, by the bishop of Saint George. From the following period, referring to the offices of Tortolì and Lanusei, documents issued by the various bishops who succeeded each other over time and paintings by Sardinian painters are on display. Another section of sacred art includes liturgical furnishings from all over the Ogliastrine territory (silver, precious sacred vestments, a collection of coins and medals, amulets and rosaries and, finally, ancient parish registers and rare and precious books). The museum itinerary continues with a visit to the historical testimonies section, where there are documents relating to the arrival of the Salesians in Lanusei, a collection of photographs, copies of ancient newspapers printed in Ogliastra, ancient scrolls, jewels and, finally, documents signed by kings Carlo Alberto and Carlo Felice, Queen Maria Theresa and all the popes of the twentieth century. The visit ends with a section dedicated to the exhibition of various objects belonging to the fascist period and the Second World War and then African art objects and Chinese porcelain. Among the most important pieces in the collection are a scroll in Hebrew and Latin, dating back to the 13th century, discovered in the binding of a 16th century book belonging to the diocesan library, a 14th century Madonna of Monserrato, in sandstone, which perhaps belonged to an Aragonese soldier, who came to conquer Sardinia in 1324 and, finally, a bronze of Hercules made of Hellenistic workmanship. There are architectural barriers.
