The exhibition, curated and created by the “Giovanni Cesaraccio” Naturalistic Paleontological Mineralogical Association, is housed at the Environmental Education Center on the island of Caprera. This structure was built by the Ministry of War (branch of the Navy) in the early 1900s. It was part of Stagnali's military compendium and was intended for troop barracks. The settlement, built on land expropriated by Garibaldi's heirs, was set up for mobile coastal rescue troops, in order to ensure the defense of the archipelago against attempts to land and enemy anchorage in inland waters. During the two great wars, it hosted the 3rd Bersaglieri Regiment, the 45th Royal Infantry Regiment and the 59th Calabria Infantry Regiment. The Museum consists of two large exhibition rooms with samples of rocks, beach sand, minerals, fossils (a total of about 300 samples) coming mainly from numerous locations on the island of Caprera. Numerous samples of black “tourmaline” (sciorlite) in crystals up to 5 cm from shales in the southern sector of the island are also on display. Among the minerals of systematic interest, mention should be made of the small (5-6 mm) but numerous crystals of bertrandite and almandine garnet found in some small pegmatitic cavities in the town of Coticcio. A sector of the Museum, where geological maps of the Archipelago of La Maddalena and Sardinia are also exhibited, is used as a teaching and video projection room; a space is dedicated to the mining of the granite of Cala Francese illustrated through work tools, documents and vintage photographs.
Why it's important to visit it
Are exhibited gigantic groups of smoked quartz crystals (up to 150 kg and 65 cm in length) described in the pages of important Italian and foreign magazines, coming from Punta Crucita, in the northeastern sector of the island.
