The Garibaldino museum is made up of all the buildings and relics that belonged to the hero. Inside we can admire the weapons, the banners, the general's wheelchair and the original furniture. Some paintings and the room in which Garibaldi died are very interesting, furnished with the bed facing Corsica and the English-made clock stopped at the time of his death, 6.20 p.m.
Giuseppe Garibaldi arrived in Caprera for the first time on September 25, 1849, following his arrest, it was decided to send him into exile in Tunis.
The Bey was not inclined to welcome it and therefore the ship in charge of transporting it was ordered to transport it to the island of La Maddalena. The ship was commanded by the Magdalenian Francesco Millelire.
On the ship, to assist the general, was his faithful companion Giovanni Battista Culiolo called 'Leggerero', also a Magdalenian, who had followed him on all his trips and had comforted him after the death of his beloved Anita.
The Magdalenians flocked in large numbers when Garibaldi arrived, everyone wanted to meet Leggero, a person who became famous for his exploits. The general was surrounded by other Magdalenins such as Giacomo Fiorentino and Antonio Susini who served him faithfully.
He dedicated the first day to getting to know the families he trusted and the next to getting to know a family in particular, that of the Susini family, to which he remained particularly attached. In those days, during a fishing trip, Garibaldi saved the lives of a child and three men who had spilled themselves with the boat; to commemorate this event, a plaque was displayed on the facade of Barabò's little house, still visible today.
During his month's stay he got to know and appreciate the inhabitants of La Maddalena, people he would soon join. Before leaving the island and landing in exile in Tangier, he wrote to the mayor Nicolò Susini a letter of thanks and gratitude to the entire population.
In love with Sardinia, he decided to buy land there: the choice fell on the island of Caprera. He bought an old house from a shepherd and with the help of his son he renovated it. He then went to London to buy a boat and convince his girlfriend Emma to follow him to Caprera; he failed to do so and in memory of the lack of engagement he baptized his boat with the name Emma.
Initially, he dedicated himself to trade between Nice and Genoa. In 1857, her Emma, loaded with lime, iron and wood, was shipwrecked near Caprera; she then decided to leave the sea permanently to dedicate herself to agriculture. He thus formed a community of pastors and friends and his house was enlarged. Garibaldi soon became the lord of Caprera, numerous emissaries and influential people came to the island for courtesy visits and advice.
Without any recognition and no reward, after having dedicated his life to his homeland, he lived his last years in absolute poverty, surrounded by the affection of his partner Francesca Armosino, until 1882, the year in which the general died.
Why is it important to visit it
The famous museum, an annual destination for countless visitors, is the house-museum of the hero of the two worlds: inside there are all the hero's relics and outside you can visit his grave and his bust in white marble, made in 1883 by the sculptor Luigi Bistolfi.
