Ittireddu, Church of San Giacomo

Ittireddu, Church of San Giacomo

Ittireddu, Church of San Giacomo

The territory of Ittireddu has returned archaeological traces that attest to the continuity of settlement starting from the recent Neolithic period. The toponym Ithir is documented in the papers of the “Condaghe di San Pietro di Silki” (11th-13th century). The church of San Giacomo dates back to the Judicial Age.
The church of San Giacomo has Romanesque forms that date back to the first half of the 13th century. The reading of the original walls, in local limestone, is hampered by subsequent buildings. The façade is the result of improperly executed restorations and therefore does not reflect the original Romanesque façade.
The longitudinal plan is about 12 m long and the façade is crowned by a sailing bell tower. The only portal is of the type with a non-monolithic lintel hanging over the perimeter walls. On the N side there was an architraved and lunetted portal with a raised end arch, currently walled up, and a single window, also arched and trumped with smooth hooks both outside and inside. Facing S/E, the nave is closed by the apse.
Along the sides of the mononavata classroom, the walls are set on a high shoe-shaped plinth and made of volcanic ashlars, therefore of a very dark shade with interpolations of cantons or entire rows in light basalt, thus hints of bichrome work.

History of studies
The first information about Ittireddu and the church of San Giacomo dates back to the 19th century. For an analysis of the building and its historical-artistic location, the file by Roberto Coroneo (1993) should be noted.
