The museum is located in the Giorgio Asproni Mining Institute, founded in 1871 under the auspices of Eng. Quintino Sella, Minister of Finance of the Lanza Government. It consists of three large rooms, which house cases containing examples of minerals, fossils and finds of industrial archeology. The museum collection has almost 3800 mineralogical, petrographic and fossil finds from all over the world, enriched by a collection of about a hundred archaeological finds, coming from mining activities, from the Nuragic, Phoenician-Punic, Roman, medieval Pisan and Aragonese periods.
A collection of finds that represents the proper identity of the Iglesiente territory and collects educational, mineralogical and paleontological collections consisting of local minerals and fossils and specimens from deposits distributed throughout the regional, national and world territory.
Why it's important to visit it
In April 2018, the new layout of the first room of the Museum entitled “The Bricks of the Earth” was inaugurated. Work is currently underway on the second and third rooms.
The room “The Bricks of the Earth” introduces the visitor to the world of mineralogy through a multimedia exhibition that presents an accurate selection of minerals, taken from the entire collection, and tells, with a sequence of images, specially shot and enjoyed through monitors and video projections, the formation of the geographical landscape of the Iglesiente by the four natural elements, water, air, earth, fire, and the passage of geological time that marks the slow process of formation of the Earth from its origins.
