Guasila, Museum of Sacred Art, Scrinia Sacra

The Guasila Museum of Sacred Art is located in the historic center of the town, a short distance from the parish church of the Blessed Assumption Virgin, designed in 1839 in neoclassical shapes by the Cagliari architect Gaetano Cima and built between 1842 and 1852.
It is located in an architectural complex of significant historical value, consisting of the former Mount Granatico and the former Town Hall. The silver and vestments are displayed in the suggestive rooms of the old mandamental prisons, recently renovated. A plaque, dated 1841, testifies to the construction of the first prison unit, which was later expanded (1857) to become a municipal palace, then a court house and a school building in the mid-twentieth century.
The collection consists of liturgical and devotional objects and sacred vestments from the parish church, some of which are still used today for the most solemn ceremonies. It is displayed in chronological order and is spread over six “thematic” environments.
The first three rooms, with their barrel vaults, are presented to the visitor as real “chests” that hold the most precious objects: the liturgical equipment, the reliquaries and the ex-vota, which span a period between the 16th and the 20th century. The gold jewelry and precious stones stand out for its refinement, a processional cross made by the Cagliari silversmith Giovanni Mameli and, the oldest piece, a 16th century reliquary, “lignum crucis”, by the Cagliari silversmith from Valencia Gaspare Castañeda.
The remaining rooms house the vestments, made with precious fabrics and embroideries, including those that belonged to Monsignor Giuseppe Melas (1901-1970), Bishop of Nuoro, a native of Guasila.

Why it is important to visit it
The museum links its valuable collections to the memory of local worship and to the history of the Church of the Blessed Assumption Virgin, one of the most important neoclassical buildings in Sardinia, elevated in 2002 to a diocesan sanctuary.
