Fonni, Tombs of the Giants of Madau

Fonni, Tombs of the Giants of Madau

Fonni, Tombs of the Giants of Madau

The burials are located in the center of the Madau river valley, in the direction of the Corru 'e Boi pass, on the top of a low plateau, in the Barbagia di Ollolai, region of central Sardinia.
The site, a veritable necropolis of tombs of giants, includes four burials facing SE.
The major burial preserves the grave body (length 22.20 m) preceded by a large exedra (rope m 24; arrow m 4.5) that delimits the space intended for funeral ceremonies.
The grave body has an internal structure consisting of a system of seven parallel walls that go up the grave. This structure is covered by a mound delimited by a crackling of worked slabs: among these are some fragments of a stele with a cup belonging to an older tomb of giants.
The summital part of the tomb ends with a “naveta” wall structure formed by inclined base orthostats on which ashlars rest arranged in regular rows retreating towards the arched top.
The hemicycle of the exedra - set up on a base formed by slabs with the function of a counter for offerings - is delimited by orthostats on which horizontal rows of ashlars are superimposed with decreasing dimensions upwards.
At the center of the exedra there is the architraved entrance door, which has as its threshold a fragment of the upper lunette of a stele from a tomb of giants.
On the lintel, perhaps, the toothed frieze formed by two horizontally superimposed blocks: the upper one is a pentagonal shape that reproduces denticles on the exposed face (width m 1.02, height m 0.22); the underlying element is a trapezoidal slab (width m 1.40/0.82, height m 0.35) with denticles colliding with those of the stone above.
In front of the entrance there is also the rectangular door manhole with a socket at the top for the socket (width 0.57/0.52 m; height 0.64 m).
The entrance leads into the trapezoidal burial compartment (length 9 m; width 1.20/1.10 m), which has walls made of well-worked blocks and arranged on overhanging horizontal rows; the roof is ovised (height 1.50 m). The paving consists of large slabs with recesses, which are part of the oldest tomb.
Tomb III of Madau was also rebuilt on the remains of an older tomb of giants.
The burial has the grave body (length 11.20 m; width 5.10 m; height 3 m) preceded by the exedra (arc 12.50 m; arrow 5.80 m) in the center of which the entrance opens (width 54/44 cm; height 60 cm) that leads into the burial chamber (length m 7; width m 1.03; height m 2.10).
The renovation of the monument has involved the expansion of the grave compartment, which has a curtain on the wall and on the bottom to the purpose of deposing the equipment.
The reconstruction of the room is highlighted by the different masonry technique of the new structure, made with rows of well-worked ashlars resting on the oldest basic orthostats.
The exedra was also renovated with the rebuilding of the seat counter (raised compared to the previous one).
The exedra also has the peculiarity of closing the space in front of the burial in a round. As in the main tomb, the façade has a wall with rows resting on an orthostatic base, a door with an architrave, perhaps, surmounted by toothed ashlars (m 0.85 x 0.40 x 1.44/97) and, in the terminal part, a small stele with a semicircular lunette (cm 84 x 57 x 31).
The top of the grave body culminates in a “shuttle” structure documented in the main tomb.
The tombs date back to the Late Bronze Age-Late Bronze Age.

History of excavations
The burials were excavated and restored in 1982-1984 by Giovanni Lilliu.
