Dorgali, Village of Tiscali

Dorgali, Village of Tiscali

Dorgali, Village of Tiscali

The village is evocatively located between cyst, oak and terebinth trees, in a sinkhole created by tectonic sinking in the heart of Mount Tiscali, in the Supramonte di Oliena.
The area has two clusters of huts of different floor plan, size and function. The first agglomeration, consisting of about forty huts, is located in sector N of the cavity, on a steep slope: it is not unlikely, therefore, that the structures were built on artificial terraces.
The huts, small in size, have an elongated circular and oval plan. The walls are preserved for a considerable height and are not very thick (m 0.55), built with crude small stones placed irregularly with the use of abundant mud mortar.
One of the houses, well preserved up to a few years ago (external diameter m 5.30, internal diameter m 4.72; height m 4.50), has thin walls with a strong projection that originally had to support a stramineal shield roof with radial joists.
The interior of the room is accessed through a large entrance (width 1.19 m; height 1.20 m), which still preserves the terebinth wooden lintel in its original position. The room is expanded by some subsidiary rooms: a small niche and cabinets.
The second village, located on the S/O side, consists of about thirty huts.
With the exception of one building, these structures in most cases leaning against the wall of the sinkhole have a rectangular or quadrangular plan and are decidedly smaller than those built on the N side.
Perhaps used as warehouses for supplies and as animal shelters, it is believed that they may have had an original wooden roof with a single slope.
Scarce nuragic ceramics come from the village, some decorated with rings (9th-8th century BC) and others from the Roman age.

History of the excavations
It was described for the first time in 1910 by Ettore Pais and, in greater detail, in 1927 by Antonio Taramelli; both scholars were able to observe the structures of the huts that were still almost intact. A brief excavation campaign was conducted by the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage of Sassari and Nuoro in 2000.
