Codrongianos, Church of the Holy Trinity of Sacchargia

Codrongianos, Church of the Holy Trinity of Sacchargia

The church and the surviving part of the Benedictine monastic complex are located in the rural plain of Saccargia. The territory reveals traces of settlement continuity since prehistoric times and had to host important cults, if the area was assigned the denomination of Sacraria, which continued in the form of Saccargia. According to legend, Judge Costantino di Torres and his wife Marcusa stopped here to spend the night, during a votive pilgrimage to the Basilica of San Gavino in Porto Torres, after having a vision on the basis of which they arranged for the construction of the church, dedicated to the Virgin and the Holy Trinity.
Santissima Trinità di Saccargia is undoubtedly the most famous and spectacular of the medieval churches on the island. Its tall bell tower emerges from the surrounding countryside when you get close to the site, surrounded by greenery but easily accessible from the state road. The importance of the monument lies, in addition to the significant dimensional scale, also in the frescoes that decorate the apse, among the few surviving Romanesque frescoes in Sardinia.
Since 1112, the Abbey of Saccargia has been counted among the Sardinian possessions of the Camaldolese monks. To the S of the building, you can see the scarce surviving structures of the cloister and the monastery, now under excavation. The church (21 x 7 m, about 14 m high) has a “commissioned” cross plan, with a triapsidal transept in NE. The walls are made of limestone and volcanic stone ashlars. The façade is preceded by a porch. The bell tower and the sacristy are placed on the S side.
Two construction phases are distinguished, in relation to different masonry techniques. The system included a triapsidal transept with cross vaults and a shorter classroom than the current one. The use of summarily sketched calcareous and volcanic cantonets is typical of the workers who worked in the Giudicato di Torres between the end of the eleventh and the beginning of the twelfth century.
Later, the room was raised and extended to the W, with a new façade on three levels. The porch with cross vaults, the bell tower and the sacristy date back to this second phase. The regular bichrome work is characteristic of the Pisan-Pistoiese training workers, operating in the second half of the 12th century.
The restoration interventions of the beginning of the last century have compromised the original physiognomy of the church. The porch has been demolished and rebuilt, the raised bell tower, the façade decorations completely compensated.

History of studies
The critical story begins with the work of Dionigi Scano (1907). The first in-depth researches are by Raffaello Delogu (1953). Piero Sanpaolesi (1975) considers it in his study on original Tuscan architecture. The most up-to-date studies are by Renata Serra (1989) and Roberto Coroneo (1993).
