The cathedral of San Antonio Abate is an art treasure that shows its value starting from the wonderful position overlooking the Gulf of Asinara.
The passing of the centuries has enriched the interior with works of art such as the beautiful wooden altars, the largest eighteenth-century pipe organ in the area, the polychrome statues of the saints ranging from Tuscan carvings to those from the Neapolitan area, the silver and the liturgical furnishings kept in the sacristies next to the scrolls and archival documents that testify to a history of 5 centuries. Above all, the work of the so-called “Master of Castelsardo” emerges, who, at the end of the 15th century, left in the altarpiece of the “Madonna with musical angels” and other plates, the culmination of Sardinian painting of the time, fully inserting the island into the most evolved cultural flows of Renaissance Italy and of Spain enchanted by Flemish masters.
The collection of the “Maestro di Castelsardo” Museum intends to document and make this heritage of art and culture accessible.
Contents: sacred silverware, paintings and plates, scrolls. The exhibition occupies the suggestive underground environments, discovered several years ago under the floors of the Castelsardo Cathedral and undergoing restoration; in the first phase, some of the crypts were already opened to the public starting in July 1999, at the time of the inauguration of the exhibition The Secret Treasure, which was the first official step in the construction of one of the most important offices of the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.
Right away, two important objectives were identified: on the one hand, to introduce the most unpublished works, including, for example, the simulacrum of the Madonna of Salasciu (13th century); on the other hand, to achieve the definitive reunification of the entire cycle of the Castelsardo altardo, through the exhibition, in the place of origin, of the plates of Saint Michael the Archangel and the Eternal Father, works of that anonymous painter who took his name from Castelsardo.
