Carbonia, Archaeological Museum “Villa Sulcis”

The Museum, the heart of the Carbonia Museum System (SimUC), is at the center of an entire chain of cultural heritage: from excavation to cataloguing, from exhibition to dissemination. Renovated in 2008 in its current structure, with a great educational imprint, it exhibits the finds of the larger Sulcitan territory and the materials of the research carried out in the numerous sites in the area. The Museum is the owner, for the Municipality of Carbonia, of the excavation at the Nuraghe Sirai.
Recommended route - The first room, the Territory Room, covers the entire area, from Su Carroppu in Sirri to Monte Crobu, from S. Giovanni Suergiu to Su Fussu tundu in Santadi, from the Nuraghe Sirai to the temple of Bagoi in Narcao. Following the right wall, you can visit the themes and sites that tell the story of prehistory and protohistory. The birth of agriculture, villages, the cult of deities and the cities of the dead in the Neolithic period (about 6000-3300 BC); contacts with other European cultures, the processing of the first metals in the Eneolithic period (about 3300-2200 BC); the cultures of the Bronze Age (about 2200-900 BC), with the development of the Nuragic civilization; the changes of the Iron Age (about 900-510 BC) and contacts with the Greeks, the Etruscans and especially with the Phoenicians.
In the connecting ramps, the sites become archaeological landscapes; through the views of the ancient Via Sulcitana, we reach the second room, dedicated to Phoenician Sulcis, illustrated by materials from Sulky- Sant'Antioco and the coastal center of Bitia.
Going even more specifically, you arrive at the Monte Sirai room in Carbonia, room 3.
The life of the Phoenician and Punic center (from 750 to 100 BC) It is still described through themes (the temple and deities, architecture and domestic activities, burials and funeral rites), and the cross-sections of daily life, with the reconstruction of a Punic kitchen, of burials in a pit, of the chamber tomb No. 10.
Then following the circular route, on the left side, you reach the following periods, and, backwards, to the landscape in Phoenician and Punic (ramp 1) and Roman (ramp 2).
Finally, the right wall of room 1 describes the territory in Roman times (238 BC - 500 AD), with the milestones of the Via Sulcitana and the necropolises of Carbonia.

Why it's important to visit it
The museum allows you to reconstruct the history of the Sulcitan territory, and offers three strong pieces: the finds of Su Carroppu that have revealed the oldest human habitation in the district (11,000 years from the present), of Monte Sirai, in fact a complete panorama of a Phoenician settlement in Sardinia, and of the Nuraghe Sirai, the vanguard of studies on the last phase of Nuragic Civilization and on the integration between Nuragic and Phoenician culture.
