Cagliari, Remembrance Park

The Parco delle Rimembranze is located in Via Sonnino, near Piazza Gramsci.
The monument originates from the “groves of remembrance” planted from 1923 onwards in many Italian municipalities to commemorate with each tree a fallen person from the First World War. In Cagliari, at the first idea of dedicating the tree-lined driver to the sanctuary of Bonaria for the purpose, the project of a memorial near the Carabinieri barracks took over, in clear continuity with the garden of San Lucifero. The construction, dating back to 1935, is due to Ubaldo Badas, then assistant engineer in the Municipal Technical Office. The layout is decidedly sober, renouncing the typical rhetoric of the many similar monuments scattered in Italy.
Two bundles, formed by a granite base and alternate rows of trachyte and Serrenti stone and bearing the names and dates of the main battles of the First World War, frame the central exedra in white limestone and red trachyte (to remember the signs of the Sassari Brigade), which bears the names of the fallen.
The fence consists of metal spheres and limestone stones, joined by chains.
