Cagliari, Sardinian Railway Museum

Cagliari, Sardinian Railway Museum

It is located inside Cagliari station, in the central Via Sassari.
The museum traces, with numerous testimonies, the most important stages in the history of railways in Sardinia. The original purpose was to preserve the evidence of industrial archeology preserved to the present day.
The activities began in 1863, with the founding of the Compagnia Reale delle Ferrovie Sarde (Italian-English). The works, carried out on a design by the engineer Benjamin Piercy, led, between 1864 and 1883, to the construction of 400 km of standard gauge network. To these were added, between 1886 and 1897, the so-called “complementary” narrow-gauge ones.
The museum, which collects hundreds of testimonies of the Sardinian history of railways, exhibits many interesting finds including: vintage photographs, a working telegraph of the Royal Railways, machinery, pieces of rail, a model of the Gennargentu ferry ship, furniture for the ticket office and waiting room, lamps, clocks, railway work tools, safes with secret openings, Chilivani's former DCO and even a living room from the Sardinian royal train, very characteristic, as it is equipped with low-rise armchairs made of hoc for the stature of King Victor Emmanuel III.

Why it's important to visit it
It's important because it represents a large part of the history of railways in Sardinia. One of the highlights is the exhibition, in the atrium of the station, of a steam locomotive model D744.003; one of the few survivors of that series, used for a long period on the Cagliari-Olbia route.
