Cagliari, Slaughterhouse

The slaughterhouse is included in the historic district of Villanova. It currently houses the headquarters of EXMA (Exhibiting and Moving Arts), one of the most important exhibition centers in Cagliari. Experimental, educational, educational and multimedia center.
The construction of the Cagliari slaughterhouse dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. It was designed around 1845 by Captain Domenico Barbino. The neo-Gothic repertoire is present in the sharp-arched openings, in the decorative blind arches, in the “medieval” turrets.
The original project included a building in the center of a vast square and four smaller buildings at the corners of the fence; a huge tank, located in the open space, provided water for slaughterhouse activities. The complex extended over a larger area, reduced due to the work carried out to expand Via Sonnino in the thirties of the twentieth century. On that occasion, the corner rooms leaning against the wall were demolished, mirrored by those still visible on Via San Gregorio Magno. The main entrance was in Via San Lucifero, consisting of a large portal, decorated with a bovine protome in the center, and two sheepskin on the sides, all in marble. The slaughterhouse was active since 1966, when the new building in Via Po was completed.
