The monument is located on the edge of a plateau that dominates the plain of Birori, in the Marghine, a region of central-northern Sardinia.
The Miuddu is a complex nuraghe, consisting of a central tower enclosed by a three-lobed bastion (length m 31; width m 26.50; height m 5.30). The central tower, with a circular plan (diameter 11.00 m), is accessed today through the opening of the staircase on the top floor, while the original entrance is obliterated by collapses. From the spiral staircase (length 10.00 m; width 1.00 m; height 2.10 m), you access the corridor, equipped with a niche, which leads to the central chamber. This room, in “tholos” (diameter 5.00-5.30 m; height 7.20 m), has three niches arranged in a cross shape. The niche on the left side is polygonal (depth m 2.50; width m 0.60/1.50; height m 2.75) and has an ogival section; the one on the front wall (depth m 2.48; width m 1.07) has an entrance that leads into a curvilinear corridor (length m 9.00); the third niche has two opposing rooms that are difficult to define because they are obstructed by the collapse.
In the third niche, on the floor of the room, a “bottle-shaped” well opens (max. diameter 1.70 m; depth 1.76 m), whose wall is made of small blocks arranged in rows.
The walls of the chamber are made of polygonal blocks of various sizes, placed in irregular rows with numerous reinforcing wedges. The bastion - with an entrance facing S - incorporates three circular towers located on the N side (diameter 7.20 m), west (diameter 7.30 m x 6.40 m), and S (diameter 7.00 m). Curiously, the fourth tower does not appear on the E side, which the quadrangular shape of the bastion would suggest. The monument is surrounded by a large antewall (length 70 m; thickness 2.00 m; height 1.50/2.00 m) that incorporates, on the S side, a circular hut with an entrance facing N (diameter 9.10 m; thickness 1.40/1.60 m; height 1.20 m). The complex dates back to 1400-1000 BC. In the immediate vicinity there is a tomb of giants.
History of excavations
It was excavated in 1995 by Alberto Moravetti and Elisabetta Alba.
