Villanovaforru, Genna Maria Archaeological Museum

Villanovaforru, Genna Maria Archaeological Museum

It is the first civic museum in Sardinia. Inaugurated in 1982, it is located in the elegant nineteenth-century building of Monte di Soccolo, which was the wheat bank to which local farmers referred. The ground floor houses finds from the excavation of the nearby Nuragic complex of Genna Maria, undertaken starting in 1969 and in particular, the entire equipment of the largest house in the village, called “a central court”, is on display, whose environments have returned numerous artifacts of various kinds, which testify to the daily activities of the settlement (dating back to the Iron Age, X-VIII century BC), abandoned due to a devastating fire and never repopulated. Interesting three-dimensional videos show the evolution of the nuragic complex, while a tactile section helps the visually impaired to visit.
The upper floor consists of several rooms, including the one dedicated to Marmilla, or to the territory in which the town of Villanovaforru is located; its windows display finds from the proto nuraghe located on the Giara di Gesturi and grave goods from various tombs of giants, including Su Quaddu de Nixias, in the territory of Lunamatrona, which is the only stele tomb in the whole of southern Sardinia and Sa Domu de s'Orcu, on the Giara di Siddi, which is still intact, is among the most monumental buildings funeraries of the Nuragic civilization. Also on display are the oldest finds found in Marmilla, from a domus de janas in Siddi, dating back to the Monte Claro period (about 2500 BC).
Another room is dedicated to the village of Pinn'e Maiolu, located on the immediate outskirts of the town; the settlement, under development, is currently the only example of water management from the Nuragic period, for civil use, witnessed by a series of channels that cross various environments.
In the Punic-Roman room, there is the very rich votive equipment found inside the Genna Maria nuraghe, dating back to the period when the monument was converted into a place of worship, in honor of agrarian deities; among the objects, hundreds of coins and lamps and some small artifacts in gold, silver and bronze. A small collection of millstones and household and funerary finds from various locations complete the exhibition, while the last room is dedicated to the medieval period.

Why it is important to visit it
The choice of exhibits enhances the relationship between objects of use and environments of discovery, reconstructing life within a settlement of three thousand years ago.
Among the most significant clay finds, fire-control tools such as portable stoves, arm holders, wings, cooking cups to replace the oven. The askoid jugs are compared with similar finds found in maritime Tuscany, in Crete and (fragmentary) in other places in the Mediterranean (Carthage) and the Atlantic Coast (Cádiz), while the pyriform vases, similar to those found in the sacred well of Sant'Anastasia in Sardara, introduce them to the cultural world. Iconic the pintadère, terracotta molds for decorating bread, found in four copies, in the village of Genna Maria. Special are the large ziri, which served as food pantries, restored “ab antiquo” with lead flakes in which the imprints of linen fabrics have remained imprinted, which recall one of the feminine activities, weaving, remembered by the reproduction of a loom, according to the models adopted in prehistoric times.
