Nuoro, Deleddian Museum-Grazia Deledda's birthplace

The birthplace of the writer Grazia Deledda, Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century; located in San Pietro, it is an example of a wealthy Nuoro home. The building is spread over three floors, with internal courtyards on the ground floor. Deledda lives there until her wedding day, which took place in 1900. In 1901, the writer settled in Rome and her visits to Nuoro thinned out. In 1913 the house was sold but it did not undergo radical transformations. Declared a national monument, it was purchased in 1968 by the Municipality of Nuoro, which transferred it to the Higher Regional Ethnographic Institute in 1979, at the symbolic price of one thousand pounds. The Institute works immediately so that the house can house a museum dedicated to the writer. Thanks to the generosity of the Madesani-Deledda family, the ISRE comes into possession of a large number of manuscripts, photographs, various documents and personal items that, when transferred from Rome to Nuoro, form the museum's first endowment. Opened in 1983, it becomes a must for scholars and visitors to Nuoro and Sardinia. Due to the need for some renovation work, the Museum was closed in 1997. On this occasion, the revision of its museum structure also began. Once the works have been completed (2000), the Deleddian Museum is profoundly renovated. The new 2006 layout, enriched with new, important documents. The visit winds through the three floors of the house and continues into the courtyard and garden. The impossibility of eliminating architectural barriers, given that the building is protected by the State as a national monument, has led to the decision to concentrate in the first two rooms on the ground floor, the only ones accessible to everyone, a general overview of the writer's life and works. In the second room, through a multimedia station, it is possible to make a virtual tour through the cameras in all the rooms of the museum. The olfactory element has not been overlooked: the scents of fresh food in the kitchen and in the pantry alternate with those recreated for the different rooms of the museum, constituting a characteristic and unforgettable note of the visit.

Why it's important to visit it
The museum intends to recompose the emotional bond between Grazia Deledda and her city, as manifested in her autobiographical novel Cosima. It also wants to propose to the visitor a journey through time, society and places of the one who, through her writing, has made known to the world the culture and feelings of Barbagia and of the whole of Sardinia.
