Tresnuraghes, Church of San Giorgio

The church of San Giorgio is located in the center of the town, but close to the western edge of the town.
The current building is located on the site of an ancient church, which he decided to rebuild by entrusting the project to the Bosano architect and plasterer Antonio Pinna.
We know in detail the events of the reconstruction of the church and of the contrasts suffered by Pinna by the Sassari master builder Vittorio Fogu, who contested the contract by invoking it to himself: on 31 March 1835, however, the bishop of Bosa Francesco Maria Tola signed the contract with the architect, who undertook to complete the work for the sum of 6000 shields.
After winning the pretensions of the Fogu and the structure of the church was finished in 1838, Pinna proceeded the following year to build the main altar in “shiny stuccos”.
The interior is structured as a single room, turned like a nail barrel with four chapels on each side, covered in a basin and interspersed with rusted pilasters with ionic capitals on which a high entablature rests.
The presbytery, square and shaped like a hemispherical dome, ends in a large semicircular apse. Of the decorations by Emilio Scherer, made between 1888 and 1889, the four Evangelists on the plumes of the dome remain - but extensively repainted -. On the other hand, the decoration of the nave, dating back to 1924-25, is perfectly readable and recently restored, due to the Scanese painter Isidoro Delogu, with subsequent interventions by the bricklayer Giovanni Loche and the Sassari painter Antonio Sassu.
The façade is characterized by its neoclassical rigor. Divided into five mirrors by six pilasters with visible trachyte ionic capitals, it is concluded by a triangular tympanum with toothed frames. On the sides, at the corner pilasters and interspersed with the façade - according to a pattern quite used in Sardinia - there are two symmetric bell towers, with a square section with rounded corners, with arched windows and rococo domes that end with a pyramidal spire.
