Tempio Pausania, Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian

The village of Nuchis developed in the 16th and 17th centuries, welcoming refugees from coastal towns crossed by Barbarians. The initial nucleus of the village was the complex consisting of two buildings (parish church and sanctuary) and the cemetery. Next to the parish church, dedicated to the Holy Spirit, is the sanctuary of Saints Cosmas and Damian, now used as an oratory.
The sanctuary of Saints Cosmas and Damian was founded in 1529 after a plague, rebuilt in 1835 and restored in 1945. Entirely made of granite with a sloping façade and a sailing bell tower on the top, it has a single-aisled classroom, with a barrel vault divided by five arches. The frescoes are by Carlo Armanni.
Despite the restoration work, the complex has its architectural value, evident in the rustic lines of the Sardinian construction tradition and in the unity given to it by the use of gray granite stone. The location in a garden space and the inclusion in the landscape of the Gallura mountains contribute to giving the place a certain environmental value.
