It was set up starting in 1945, by the directors Servadei, Martelli, Fiori and Prota. The collection, developed around a core of material from the University of Bologna, with about 60,000 insects, represents the richest public entomological collection present today in Sardinia, for both scientific and educational purposes. The insects are stored in shelved cabinets, sorted by family, genus, and species. In the collection there are extensive sections concerning: Lepidoptera (the most conspicuous part of the collection), and in particular Noctuidae, Beetles, Hymenoptera, Cave Insects, Tropical Insects (mainly for educational purposes).
The Department also houses: biological boxes with specimens of the same insect in the different stages of growth; the warehouse of prepared insects is still being studied and determined. The collection also has a photographic archive of photomechanical prints, films and glass plates.
