Sanluri, Historical and Ethnographic Museum of the Capuchin Fathers

The convent of the Capuchin Friars was built on one of the highest and most panoramic hills in the area and can be located between 1608 and 1609, following the approval and personal interest of the Archbishop of Cagliari, Francesco Desquivel and the parish vicar of Sanluri, Don Pietro Pilaris and also thanks to the generosity of the Marquis of Laconi, lord of Sanluri.
Evolved over time thanks to a series of expansions, the convent now houses an interesting museum itinerary that, thanks to a large nucleus of liturgical furnishings, sacred furniture and archival documents, allows us to reconstruct four hundred years of the history of the Capuchin Fathers in Sardinia, recovering the memory of objects, activities, customs and traditions of the past.
The Historical and Ethnographic Museum of the Capuchin Fathers consists of finds from other Capuchin convents in Sardinia and the collections collected by the Friars. It is mainly divided into three sections. The first, dedicated to art and sacred furnishings, houses paper documents, illuminated choirs, psalters for friar use, papal decrees, relics, polychrome wooden statues, paintings, tabernacles, monstrances and other liturgical objects. The second contains a collection of archaeological finds from different places on the island and also from the territory of Sanluri, ranging from Neolithic to Early Christian and Byzantine periods.
Finally, the third is dedicated to the reconstruction of daily life inside the Convent. Here you can admire a collection of tools used in the past by the religious community that was responsible for working wood, adjusting footwear or watches according to the fulfillment of the sacred rule ora et labora.
