The Castle of Sanluri, still intact and inhabitable, was probably rebuilt and reinforced on a pre-existing structure by royal decree of 27 July 1355 by Peter IV of Aragon, following the Peace of Sanluri signed between the Kingdom of Sardinia and Corsica and the Kingdom of Arborea, and was completed twenty-seven days later, as reported in the master book of the Archives of the Crown of Aragon in Barcelona.
Over the centuries, the ownership of the Castle changed, until the twenties of the twentieth century, when Nino Villa Santa, an army officer and member of the General Staff of the Duke of Aosta, bought it and allocated it partly to a residence and partly to the Museum of the Risorgimento.
The Castle currently houses numerous collections, including the one dedicated to the Risorgimento and the First World War, which houses Garibaldi relics, weapons and field objects, vintage newspapers and the Tricolor that flew in Trieste returned to Italy in 1918.
The collection of artistic ceroplasty is significant: more than 400 works dating back to the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Including some rare pieces, dating back to the 16th-19th century, by Italian and foreign artists such as Susini, Du Quesnoy, Zumbo or Ammanniti. They are miniature models of three-dimensional monuments, cameos, medallions, circles of the Way of the Cross and scenes of daily life, made to show the various clients the proposals to be implemented on a larger scale.
Also noteworthy are the Napoleonic section and the collection of letters and autographs by the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio.
