Pozzomaggiore, Horse Museum

“The museum is temporarily closed for renovations”

In Pozzomaggiore, horse culture has a special meaning for the entire territory. Equine farming represents a significant economic reality and the horse is not only a cultural subject, but a valid means for the tourist development of the Community.
In fact, a series of routes have been designed, racetracks that cross a sweet and wild territory, rich in intense scents of the Mediterranean scrub and important Neolithic and Nuragic vestiges that attract tourists who visit them.
The “Horse Museum” is located in the rooms that were the seat of the Augustinian Convent from the beginning of the 17th century, until the second half of the 19th century and, later, home to the Carabinieri barracks on horseback.
The museum is spread over ten themed rooms in which the horse represents the common thread of a historical, anthropological and ethnographic story. Unique in its kind, it is organized according to common themes that underline the importance that the horse has always assumed in human life.
The museum is fully integrated into the territory as a dynamic and proactive organism, within which, in parallel with the layout and contents initially proposed, temporary exhibitions and cultural events are set up.
The Pesarin Donation is also located within the museum spaces, consisting of valuable architectural elements such as lintels, capitals, columns and stone jambs, the result of the work and skill of local stonemasons, saved from oblivion and the destruction generated by the renewal of the building stock of the historic center of Pozzomaggiore. The collection of these finds was carried out with great sensitivity and care by Mr. Pesarin and, subsequently, donated to the Municipality of Pozzomaggiore.
The Museum is also open on the occasion of local events, national and village festivals, with guided tours for both individuals and groups.
