Ozieri, Civic Archaeological Museum at the Poor Clares

Ozieri, Civic Archaeological Museum at the Poor Clares

Ozieri, Civic Archaeological Museum at the Poor Clares

The museum is located in the former eighteenth-century convent of the Poor Clares, suitably restored. It is dedicated to the archeology of the Ozieri area, rich in resources since prehistoric times due to the presence of precious flints, an arable plain and metal deposits.
The exhibition is divided into five sections. The prehistoric section houses part of the finds of the culture of San Michele or Ozieri, coming from the homonymous Ozierese cave (which, in fact, gave its name to this culture, spread throughout the island during the recent Neolithic) and from other places in the area.
The protohistoric section is characterized by a significant number of Nuragic artifacts, including a sheet of gold and bronzes both for use and for worship: of particular importance are the model of nuraghe da Cardianu, the bronze instruments from Baldosa, the lead weights, an “ox-hide” ingot from Bisarcio, the bronze of the “boxer” from San Luca.
The historical section shows monuments, steles, finds from Roman necropolises and places of worship, as well as ornamental artifacts in bronze, silver and gold and items of clothing dating back to the early and late Middle Ages.
A section is dedicated to numismatics, with a large series of coins starting from the Greek colonial era and up to the Savoy period.
The fifth section consists of donations made by the heirs of eminent Ozierese citizens and includes, among other things, a series of portraits, photographs and period objects, historical documentation.

Why it's important to visit it
The museum, housed in a valuable historical structure, offers a diachronic journey through a territory rich in resources, which has given its name, with its findings, to an important culture of the Sardinian Neolithic. The numismatic collection is among the richest on the island.
