Nuoro, Spazio Ilisso

Nuoro, Spazio Ilisso

Nuoro, Spazio Ilisso

The entire ground floor and gardens house the Museum of Sardinian 1900s Sculpture, with a collection of over 100 works by the greatest island artists, some also known internationally: Francesco Ciusa, Costantino Nivola, Salvatore Fancello, Maria Lai, Eugenio Tavolara, Gavino Tilocca, Pinuccio Sciola.
The first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions related to research and relations between the visual arts, divided into the different expressive fields of contemporary expression; other spaces are reserved for consulting the archives of applied arts and photography, and for teaching activities.
The museum structure: Spazio Ilisso is located in a historic building known by the people of Nuoro as Casa Papandrea, after the name of the previous owners. The installation of the permanent collection inside a headquarters created as a home derives from the intention of preserving that atmosphere of “home” that allows art to be brought back to everyday life, in a welcoming and familiar environment, regardless of its cultural and educational function.
The complex is the result of two distinct periods of construction; to the house from the beginning of the 19th century, with its popular character, arranged in an “L” shape around the well of the interior patio, was added in the early 1900s, the building on three levels in art nouveau style. The climbing staircase leading to the mezzanine floor dominates the garden on Via Brofferio, which has two beautiful examples of cedar from Lebanon on the sides, surrounded by an elegant railing and a wrought iron gate. A second, internal and more intimate garden encompasses the well and houses various varieties of roses and other valuable species found in the old Nuoro gardens.
The structure, now intended for public use, has required years of scrupulous conservative restoration. Located in the historic heart of Nuoro, a space of memory and a rare intact example of the local architectural taste of the beginning of the 20th century, despite the change of intended use, which required the removal of architectural barriers, it preserves the original “living space”: the size of the rooms, ceiling decorations and barrel vaults, some lowered ones, granite staircases, fireplace, windows, cement tiles and original plasters.

Because it is important to visit it
Spazio Ilisso makes available, through a permanent exhibition, the most significant collection of Sardinian sculpture and ceramics of the 20th century. In addition to consulting the archives of applied arts, Spazio Ilisso proposes itself as a museum environment that itself becomes an object of enjoyment; not only a container for works of art and temporary exhibitions but also a meeting place, with the large gardens, where the sculptures dialogue with pre-existing natural essences, always open to welcoming the public interested in theatrical and dance performances, musical shows and book presentations.
