Traditions in Sardinia

Popular traditions, in their multifaceted manifestations, are still deeply rooted in Sardinian culture today.

The traditional dress expresses the character of a land with a thousand-year history and if, by now, there are few centers of the island where it is still worn daily, during great festivals, such as that of Sant'Efisio in Cagliari or the Sassari Cavalcade, it can be admired in all its variations.

Even traditional textile production in Sardinia has a very ancient history, which goes back centuries to the Roman age, a period in which the existence of significant textile activity is witnessed. But it was especially in the nineteenth century that family production spread.

Sardinian craftsmanship has characteristics that make it unique and inimitable, thanks to the particular decorative motifs, almost an alphabet that is the origin of a symbolic language. Its origins are not only linked to the needs of daily life, but also to a sacral aspect.

Fabrics, clothes, carvings, weaves, ceramics, were artifacts intended, above all, for the domestic market.
Starting with the unification of Italy, they become part of the process of cultural massification, which risks compromising their authenticity.

“Innovation in tradition”, the motto of Eugenio Tavolara, creator of the ISOLA brand, could be assumed by those who, today, intend to operate in the craft sector, saving the peculiarities of Sardinia without renouncing market logic.
