Restoration and enhancement of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (CUP E57B22000670006)
The church, datable to the late Middle Ages on the basis of its constructive and typological characteristics, was built around a pre-existing well that is likely to be considered to date back to the Nuragic era, due to the construction technique and in line with a continuity of use of places of worship found in Sardinia.
The rectangular planimetric layout has a single room, divided into four bays in the middle of three round arches in square sandstone ashlars set on molded capitals, which in turn rest on quadrangular pilasters.
In front of the main façade there is a porch and in correspondence with the presbytery a small quadrangular volume housing the sacristy; it can be assumed that these rooms are the result of a subsequent addition. Above the main façade, there is a tympanum with a sailing bell tower above it. The wooden roof is of the “Lombard” gable type with the main structure of arcarecci, a small structure of rafters perpendicular to the latter and planked above, covered in Sardinian tiles lined with mortar
.The pavement of the classroom consists of large stone slabs; the altar is made of stone, summarily worked with ashlars of considerable size mixed with stones, surmounted by a massive monolithic sandstone canteen.
Additional characteristic elements are the wooden pulpit decorated with bas-relief, the stone holy water fountain carved in local sandstone and the sparse relief decoration that frames the three niches placed on the back wall of the presbytery.
The project for the enhancement of the building mainly involved restoration interventions, aimed at restoring and preserving historical elements, accompanied by a set of works designed to improve the accessibility and use of indoor and outdoor spaces.
