Tools for language protection

There are three legal levels for the promotion of the Sardinian language: the international one, the Italian state one and the Sardinian regional one.
In the European Union, among others, the most important document that can be referred to for the protection of the Sardinian language is the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages approved in Strasbourg in 1992.
Unfortunately, Italy, with the sole exception of France, is the only Western European state that has not ratified this important community document that is still waiting to be fully implemented on the island and throughout the peninsular territory.
The Sardinian community, however, despite being a recognized historical minority, has no representatives in the Strasbourg Parliament despite the attempts made in the past by the Regional Council of Sardinia.
The Sardinian language, on the other hand, found its official recognition in the law of 15 December 1999, n. 482, “Rules on the protection of historic linguistic minorities” published in the Official Gazette No. 297 of 20 December 1999.
However, the island language is not the only one to be protected in Italy. Just like the whole of Europe, it is rich and prides itself on the phenomenon of local languages that, far from being considered harmful, contribute to the richness of the complexity of the identity of our ancient continent.
