Francesco Masala

A bilingual writer, Francesco Masala has published books of poetry, fiction, theater and non-fiction, in Sardinian and Italian. The multiple translations into foreign languages testify to the universality of the message of his works.
His controversial charge tempered by a great humanity is well known. His most important works are the novel “Those with White Lips” (1986), the collection of poems “Black Bread” (1956), “Su Connottu” (bilingual popular drama in collaboration with director Gianfranco Mazzoni), “Poesias in due limbas” (1981), “Sardinian rice” (1984); “The oil god” (1986); “History of Sardinian theater” (1987), “S'Istoria - Condaghe in Sardinian limba” (1989).
He was born in Nughedu San Nicolò on 17 September 1916. In Rome he obtained a degree in Literature. The Second World War saw him engaged first on the Yugoslav front, then on the Russian front, where he was wounded in combat and decorated for military valour. Dismissed, he taught for thirty years, first in Sassari, then in Cagliari. A long and friendly cultural and political affinity binds him to Emilio Lussu, Aldo Capitini, Giuseppe Dessì and Salvatore Cambosu. Publicist journalist, for fifty years he has collaborated in newspapers and magazines with articles on literary, artistic and theatrical criticism. He was president of the Sardinian literary prize 'Città di Ozieri' and, in 1978, of the 'Comitadu pro sa limba', which presented the 'Bill of popular initiative for perfect bilingualism in Sardinia'. He died in Cagliari on 23 January 2007.
