Florinas, Necropolis of S'Abbadia

The tombs, located on the slope of the hill of S'Abbadia, are dug into two erratic limestone boulders.
The funerary complex includes four hypogeums.
Three burials - with a chamber preceded by a pavilion - are dug into the boulder further downstream, while Tomb IV, with a multicellular plan, is built in the upstream boulder.
Tomb I, with an elevated entrance facing SW, preserves the pavilion (width 1.42 m; length 90 cm; height 86 cm) at the bottom of which the entrance door to the compartment, now completely ruined but originally adorned with frames, opened.
The cell, quadrangular in plan (m 2.30 x 2.96 x 1.10), has slightly inclined walls and a flat sloping ceiling.
Tomb II, dug further S - at a considerable height compared to the country level so as to be difficult to reach - was perhaps not completed: a quadrangular access pavilion (m 1.18 x 0.73 x 0.85) leads, through a trapezoidal door, into a small elliptical cell (cm 98 x 45; height cm 72) with an oven vault.
Tomb III, built instead on a country level, is cluttered with land.
The rectangular pavilion (m 1.80 x 1.20 x 1.30) has carefully finished walls. At the bottom, a trapezoidal door opens, surmounted by a false lintel in relief; it leads to a very irregular floor plan (m 1.45 x 1.30 x 0.80) with inclined walls and ceiling.
Tomb IV, also built in an erratic limestone boulder, consists of seven rooms. The anticell, today without the front part due to the collapse of the front of the boulder, had the access door facing S-SO and opened at a considerable height above the ground.
The next room, trapezoidal (m 3.20/3.45 x 2.10 x 1.87), has a flat ceiling inclined towards the entrance wall, almost to imitate a single-pitched roof.
The main cell, accessible by a door that is now wide open, has an irregular trapezoidal plan (4.15/4.65 x 2.93/3.15 x 1.50 m); four secondary compartments open up on the walls of the room.
The compartment on the right - with a trapezoidal door equipped with a built-in frame - has a trapezoidal plan (m 2.45 x 1.93/1.40 x 0.88) and preserves traces of a low dividing septum (thickness cm 30).
In the back wall of the main cell, there are doors, with a built-in frame, which lead to two other rooms: the first trapezoidal (m 1.70/1.43 x 2.40 x 1.15/0.90 x 1.08/0.99), the second quadrangular (m 2.54 x 1.60 x 0.99).
A recessed door made in the left wall introduces the most interesting environment of the burial: the room has an elliptical plan (m 2.37 x 1.15/0.78 x 0.80/1.00) and preserves, sculpted on the back wall, a false door - now difficult to identify - surmounted by a small strip on which an architrave is carved in relief.
On the same wall, offset to the left, the door that leads to the last room opens: this entrance has a unique frame on both sides.
The room has a semicircular plan (m 2.75 x 1.84 x 1.20) and a flat ceiling somewhat inclined towards the entrance.

History of the excavations
The necropolis was investigated by Paolo Melis.

How to get
From the town of Florinas, take the road to Cargeghe and immediately turn to Banari-Ittiri; after passing the church of Sant'Antonio, turn left for Ittiri. Continue for a few more kilometers until you meet Nuraghe Corvos; pass it and turn left for Banari. After about 900 meters, just before arriving at the church of Santa Maria de Sea, there are some outcroppings of limestone rock in which the domus de janas have been excavated on the slope to the left of the road.
