Cuglieri, Casteddu Ezzu

Cuglieri, Casteddu Ezzu

Cuglieri, Casteddu Ezzu

Cuglieri is located on the slopes of the hills of Montiferru, in a mountainous area full of woods and rich in springs and watercourses. The ruins of Casteddu Ezzu rise above a basaltic hill.
The castle of Montiferru, now called “Casteddu Ezzu”, was built presumably in the 12th century, by the hand of Ittocore, brother of Judge Barisone di Torres, with the purpose of protecting the borders with the kingdom of Arborea. In the 13th century, the castle, together with the neighboring territories, was annexed to the Giudicato d'Arborea, by the sovereign Mariano II. Starting from the 15th century, it fell into the hands of the Zatrillas family, who maintained it in the following centuries, precisely until 1670, the year in which it was permanently abandoned. The story goes that in 1668 Donna Francesca Zatrillas, wife of Agostino Castelvì and Marchioness of Laconi, found refuge here to escape accusations of killing her husband and plotting against the viceroy. Finally, the Marchioness managed to escape and embark for Livorno. Precisely because of these events, the castle was abandoned.
Casteddu Ezzu's material emergencies are limited to the remains of towers, wall walls and underground rooms, probably used as tanks. The castle, whose plan was elongated, enclosed within its walls a series of rooms, of which traces have remained at the level of the foundations, but whose functions are unknown.

History of studies
There are no recent studies that deal with the structure of the castle of Montiferru. Reference is made to the entry “Cuglieri”, edited by Vittorio Angius for the Casalis “Dictionary”, published in the mid-nineteenth century. A re-edition of the work, with the selection of headwords relating to Sardinia, was edited by Ilisso Edizioni in 2006.
