Cagliari, Post and Telegraph Building

The Palazzo delle Poste e Telegrafi, built starting in 1926, defined the urban layout of Piazza del Carmine (called Piazza XXVII Marzo until 1930) in a vast area between Via Maddalena and Vico Sassari.
The construction took place between 1926 and 1932. She was very tormented both by the strenuous choice of the area and by the collapse of the first wing of the building under construction, which caused two deaths and numerous injuries as well as the interruption of work for a long period.
The long façade occupies a large part of the N side of the square on a rectangular plan with rounded edges with three internal courtyards, two lateral and a larger central one separated by two buildings placed perpendicular to the main façade. It is spread over different levels, including the raised ground floor houses rooms for the public, and the two upper floors are intended for management, administrative and service offices.
The building has a central body enclosed in two protruding side wings with a covering of the ground floor with parallel bands, also present in the pilasters that vertically mark the entire building. In the side bodies, the axle windows have different solutions for each floor, but in the central body a pronao supported by four Tuscan columns overlooks the entrance staircase, allowing access to the building through three large arched openings. The structure is completed by a protruding frame with a parapet and the central annoyance in line with the pronaos.
